I really need to read more James Joyce. On a note only related if you read the following link, the idea of a professor inviting students to break the “rules of writing” is a great one. I wish I had more teachers like him. I am all for breaking rules, I try to do it as much as possible. The very important thing to realize, though, is that one needs to know the rules before one breaks them. And not only to know the rules but to know them so well that it is clear that one knows them and by that clarity, it becomes equally clear that one is purposefully breaking them. There is a fat line between vomiting out a mixed metaphor because you think it’s clever in your head and having that same mixed metaphor come through for your readers. I have neither the energy nor the remaining wit to come up with a good mixed metaphor here, but trust me, if I wasn’t exhausted to the point of nearly falling over, you’d be getting some real wordplay right here.
Anyway, good morning, charlatans! Wake up your brain husks, bid your dreams adieu, and step into the light. The horrible, horrible light. It is a new day, and a new chance to be alive. Waste not, want not.
